How to Rewrite Text on iPhone Without Switching Apps

Every way to rewrite and proofread text on iPhone, from built-in tools to chatbots and AI keyboards, and why fixing it from the keyboard is the fastest option.

You're halfway through a message to your landlord, a reply to a client, or a note to a group chat, and the sentence isn't right. It's too long, a little too blunt, or there's a typo you can feel but can't spot. You want it fixed now, without losing your place.

On iPhone there are several ways to rewrite or proofread text. Some take a second. Others send you on a round trip through two or three apps. Here's how they compare, and why the keyboard is the fastest place to do it.

Option 1: Autocorrect and spell check

The basics are built in. Autocorrect fixes typos as you type, misspelled words get a red underline you can tap for suggestions, and Text Replacement (in the keyboard settings) expands shortcuts into longer phrases.

Good for: typos and repeated phrases. Not for: tone, clarity or length. Autocorrect won't tell you that your message sounds annoyed.

Option 2: Apple's Writing Tools

On iPhones that support Apple Intelligence, with it turned on and in a supported language, you can select text and choose Writing Tools from the menu that appears. It can proofread, rewrite, adjust the tone (friendlier, more professional, more concise) and summarise.

Good for: quick system-wide edits, if your device supports it. Trade-offs: it depends on your iPhone model, language and settings, and you work through menus on top of your text: select, open the menu, pick an option, review, accept.

Option 3: Copy and paste into a chatbot

This is the most flexible option, and the slowest. Count the steps:

  1. Select the text.
  2. Copy it.
  3. Switch to the chatbot app.
  4. Paste it and type an instruction.
  5. Wait for the reply.
  6. Copy the part you want, skipping the "Sure! Here's a polished version:" line.
  7. Switch back.
  8. Select your original text again and paste over it.

Eight steps for one sentence. It works well for big jobs, such as a cover letter or a difficult email you want to think through. For everyday messages, the context switch costs more than the edit is worth, and it's easy to lose your place or paste over the wrong paragraph.

Option 4: A rewriting keyboard

Since iOS 8, iPhone has supported third-party keyboards. The keyboard is the one tool that is already open in every text field, in every app, at the exact moment you're writing. That makes it a natural place for rewriting.

The flow becomes: type, tap, done. No copying, no switching, no pasting.

There are trade-offs worth knowing about:

  • AI features need network access, which on iPhone means turning on a keyboard's "Allow Full Access" permission. We wrote a full explainer on what Allow Full Access means.
  • Some fields are off limits. iOS switches to the system keyboard in password fields, and some apps block third-party keyboards entirely.
  • Keyboards only see part of the text. iOS limits how much of the surrounding text a keyboard can read, so for very long paragraphs you may need to select exactly what you want changed.

How the options compare

Method Steps for a quick fix Works across apps Best for
Autocorrect and spell check 0 to 1 Yes Typos
Apple's Writing Tools 3 to 5 Yes, on supported devices Proofreading, tone tweaks
Copy to a chatbot About 8 Yes, with app switching Long or complex rewrites
Rewriting keyboard 1 to 2 Most fields Everyday messages and emails

Why the keyboard wins for everyday writing

Speed is part of it, but not all of it:

  • You never leave the conversation. The message you're replying to stays on screen while you fix your reply.
  • The result lands where the text was. No hunting for the right spot to paste.
  • Your preferences are already set. You don't have to type "make it shorter but keep my tone" every time.
  • You can undo. If the rewrite misses, the original is one tap away.

How Rewritr works

Rewritr is a custom keyboard for iPhone that does exactly this. Type as normal, then tap the sparkle button and choose an action:

  • Correct fixes spelling, grammar and punctuation, and keeps your wording and tone wherever possible.
  • Polish improves the flow while keeping your meaning.
  • Shorten cuts the text down substantially while keeping what matters.
  • Custom lets you type your own instruction, such as "make this sound less annoyed" or "add a polite opening".

Rewritr rewrites the text you've selected or, if nothing is selected, the paragraph around your cursor. If the text changes while a rewrite is on its way, Rewritr doesn't insert the result, so it never overwrites something you've just typed. You can cancel a pending rewrite, and if your text is already fine, Rewritr tells you so instead of changing it for the sake of it.

Right after a rewrite, the undo arrow restores your original text in one step. It's a quick safety net rather than a full history, so it becomes unavailable once you edit further or move the cursor.

Set your style once

In the Rewritr app, the AI Style page lets you choose how rewrites should sound:

  • Writing style: Polished, Clear and concise, Professional, or Keep my voice
  • Tone: Keep my tone, Warm, Direct, or Confident
  • Focus words: words or topics you want Rewritr to pay attention to

The app shows a preview. Take "I wanted to follow up about the idea we discussed." With Clear and concise, it becomes "Following up on the idea we discussed." With Keep my voice, it becomes "I wanted to circle back on the idea we discussed."

Private by default

Autocomplete and next-word suggestions run on your iPhone and never leave it. Only the rewrites you explicitly ask for are sent to an AI model (Google Gemini), along with your chosen instruction and style. That's why rewriting requires Full Access, while typing and suggestions work without it.

Rewritr supports English with a QWERTY layout and French with AZERTY, and runs on iPhone with iOS 26. Rewritr Pro adds 500 AI rewrites per month, custom prompts, advanced styles and saved presets.

Tips for better rewrites

  • Write the messy version first. Get your point down, then fix it. Rewriting is faster than agonising.
  • Select precisely. If only one sentence needs work, select just that sentence.
  • Read before you send. AI output can still contain mistakes, especially with names, numbers and dates.
  • Keep sensitive details out. Don't send card numbers, passwords or private medical information through any AI rewrite.

Try it in your next message

Rewriting shouldn't mean leaving the app you're writing in. If you want Correct, Polish and Shorten one tap away in every text field, have a look at Rewritr.
