Rewritr Privacy Policy

Effective October 7, 2026

Rewritr is an iPhone keyboard made by Betelgeuse Studio LLC ("we", "us"). A keyboard sees what you type, so we want to be precise about what Rewritr does with it. This policy explains what stays on your iPhone, what is sent when you use an AI action, and the choices you have. If anything is unclear, write to us at hello@betelgeuse.studio.

The short version

  • Typing and suggestions stay on your iPhone. Autocomplete and next-word predictions are worked out on your device, using the system dictionary and a small word history stored locally. They never use the network.
  • Text leaves your iPhone only when you ask. When you tap an AI action (Correct, Polish, Shorten, Lengthen, Custom or Prompt), Rewritr sends the text it is working on, your instruction and your rewrite preferences directly to Google's Gemini API.
  • No servers, accounts, ads or analytics of our own. We never receive what you type.
  • AI actions need "Allow Full Access". Without it, Rewritr works as an ordinary keyboard and sends nothing.
  • Password fields are off-limits. iOS always switches to the system keyboard in secure fields.
  • Please don't use AI actions on sensitive text.
  • Subscriptions are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details.

1. Typing and suggestions (on your iPhone)

The three suggestion slots above the keys offer completions and next-word predictions in the language you chose (English or French). They are worked out entirely on your iPhone, from:

  • the text just before the cursor, as iOS shares it with the keyboard;
  • Apple's system dictionary for that language;
  • phrase lists built into the app;
  • your word history: Rewritr remembers the words you use most, and common pairs of words, with a count for each, so it can suggest them later. It learns from the words just before the cursor while Rewritr is your keyboard, and keeps only a few hundred words and word pairs per language, dropping the least used.

The word history is stored only on your iPhone, in Rewritr's own storage (shared between the Rewritr app and its keyboard). It is never sent to us or to Google. Like other app data, it can be part of your iPhone's own backups. There is no button to clear it yet: deleting the Rewritr app removes it, along with your settings.

2. AI actions (sent to Google's Gemini API)

When you tap the sparkle button and choose an action, Rewritr sends one request, directly from your iPhone to Google's Gemini API, over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection:

Action Text sent Instructions sent
Correct The selected text or, if nothing is selected, the paragraph around the cursor A built-in instruction to fix spelling, grammar and punctuation
Polish, Shorten, Lengthen The selected text or the paragraph around the cursor A built-in instruction, plus your AI Style preferences (writing style, tone and focus words)
Custom The selected text or the paragraph around the cursor The instruction you type, plus your AI Style preferences
Prompt The description you type of what you want written A built-in instruction, plus your tone preference

"The paragraph around the cursor" is the text between the line breaks before and after the cursor, as far as iOS lets the keyboard see it (apps can cut long text short). Other paragraphs in the field are not sent.

Google's reply is placed into your text field. Rewritr adds no name, account or device identifier of yours to the request, but like any internet request, Google sees your device's IP address. Cancelling a rewrite stops Rewritr from waiting for the reply; a request that has already been sent may still reach Google.

What Google does with it. Google handles these requests under the Gemini API Additional Terms of Service (https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/terms) and Google's Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy). Under those terms, Google may keep the content of requests for a period of time, for example to detect abuse, and depending on the type of service, may use it to improve its products. We do not control how long Google keeps it. Please read Google's terms if this matters to you.

Please don't use AI actions on sensitive text, such as passwords, banking or health details, ID numbers, or other people's confidential information. You can still type such text with Rewritr: only AI actions send text anywhere.

3. "Allow Full Access"

iOS keeps keyboards offline unless you turn on Allow Full Access (Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Rewritr). Apple shows a warning when you turn it on, because Full Access lets a keyboard use the network. Rewritr uses it to send the AI requests you start and to share your settings between the Rewritr app and the keyboard. Without Full Access, typing and suggestions keep working, and AI actions ask you to turn it on.

4. Secure fields and other limits

  • iOS never lets third-party keyboards into password fields and other secure text fields (or phone-number pads): the system keyboard appears instead, so Rewritr never sees what you type there.
  • Some apps choose not to allow third-party keyboards at all.

5. Information stored on your iPhone

Everything Rewritr keeps is stored on your iPhone, in its own storage:

  • AI Style settings: writing style, tone and focus words.
  • Keyboard settings: language, auto-capitalisation, haptic feedback and appearance.
  • Setup status: whether the keyboard has been opened and whether Full Access is on, so the app can guide your setup.
  • Word history: see section 1.

To let you undo a rewrite, the keyboard keeps the original text in memory, at most until the keyboard closes. It is never saved.

6. Information we do not collect

Rewritr has no account and no server of its own. We do not receive your typing, your AI requests or Google's replies. Rewritr contains no analytics, advertising, tracking or crash-reporting tools, and does not access your location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone.

If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone's settings, Apple may give us crash reports and aggregated statistics about Rewritr. These reach us without your name or contact details.

7. Subscriptions (Rewritr Pro)

Rewritr Pro is bought through the App Store. Apple processes the payment, and we never receive your name, e-mail, card or billing details. The app checks with Apple, on your iPhone, whether you have an active subscription. You can manage or cancel it in your Apple account settings.

8. Children

Rewritr is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

9. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EEA and UK, or the CCPA/CPRA in California), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export the data held about you, to object to or restrict its use, and to complain to your local data protection authority.

  • We hold no personal data about you on our side. Everything Rewritr stores is on your iPhone.
  • Stop sending text to Google at any time by not using AI actions, or by turning off Allow Full Access.
  • Erase everything Rewritr stores by deleting the app.
  • Requests about AI requests already sent concern data held by Google; see Google's privacy controls. We are happy to help: just e-mail us.

We do not sell or share your personal information.

10. Security

AI requests travel over encrypted (HTTPS) connections. Your settings and word history stay on your iPhone, protected by iOS.

11. Changes to this policy

If we change what Rewritr sends, or who receives it (for example a different AI provider or a server of our own), we will update this policy before that version of the app is released. We will update the effective date above and, for important changes, tell you in the app or in the store listing.
